Box 88 — Charles Cumming
Cumming is prolific in his output of espionage thrillers, and I love a good spy story. He's highly skilled, and they're well constructed, well written and are good reads. But I occasionally feel they lack the between-the-lines depths and themes of the best of the genre. They sometimes edge a little more towards Spooks territory than Le Carré.
A Colder War — Charles Cumming
See above.
Damascus Station — David McCloskey
Again, competently done, and an enjoyable read. But it boils down to 'tough CIA guy has forbidden fling with beautiful woman from the other side who wants to help him, and he must choose his job or his relationship', and I kind of feel that's been done a fair bit already.
Joe Country — Mick Herron
The next in the Slough series that I treat myself to every now and then. Love 'em.
A Constellation Of Vital Phenomena — Anthony Marra
Every Anthony Marra book I've read has been a treat. A hugely creative construction of unique and intriguing characters and unusual situations that you just immerse yourself in. Through it all he explores the simple beauty in how humans pull together, and pull through, in the face of conflict and adversity. Highly recommend.
August 2025 reading
This month I've been reading more around the Espionage Thriller genre (and one treat outside the genre).
